How is the difficulty of a trampoline skill worked out?

I · Intermediate · The exercise and the score · 1 of 7
Checked 14 October 2026

By counting rotation. Each quarter somersault and each half twist is worth 0.1. A complete single somersault is 0.5, a double 1.0, a triple 1.6 and a quadruple 2.2. Piked and straight positions, backward multiple somersaults and heavily twisting ones earn small bonuses. The ten values are added.

How it works

  • Somersault: "Each ¼ somersault (90°) 0.1 pts".
  • Whole somersaults: single 0.5, double 1.0, triple 1.6, quadruple 2.2.
  • Twist: "Each ½ twist (180°) 0.1 pts".
  • Added together: for an element with both, the somersault and twist values are summed.
  • Jumps without rotation: a tuck, pike or straddle jump or a seat drop is worth 0.1.
  • Position bonus: 0.1 for a single somersault without twist done piked or straight, and 0.1 per somersault for multiple somersaults in those positions.
  • Backward bonus: 0.1 for a backward double, 0.2 for a triple and 0.3 for a quadruple.
  • Twisting bonus: extra for doubles with more than two full twists and triples with more than one.
  • Exercise bonus: 0.3 for each triple-somersault element beyond two in a women's exercise and beyond five in a men's.
  • The least difficult shape counts: if a multiple somersault mixes shapes, it is valued in the easier one.
  • Open-ended: the difficulty of a single element is not capped for seniors.
  • Juniors: values are limited by age group, and quadruple somersaults are not allowed.

The glossary has the trampoline difficulty entry, the somersault, the twist, the pike, the layout, the straddle and the difficulty value.

Tricky cases

What is a plain tucked back somersault worth?

0.5, for one complete somersault.

And the same somersault done straight?

0.6. A single somersault without twist in the piked or straight position earns 0.1 more.

A triple somersault is piked in the first turn and tucked in the second. How is it valued?

As tucked. The judges take the least difficult position shown.

A gymnast performs an element not on the card. Do they lose its value?

No. The difficulty judges record and value what was performed. They also signal the change with a red flag.

Why the rule exists

A formula removes argument: any element, including one nobody has done before, has a value the moment its rotations are counted. The bonuses correct the formula where it undervalues what is harder in practice, such as holding a straight body through a double.
