About SportsMaze
SportsMaze explains sport to people who want to follow it: the rules, the words, the tournaments and who has won them. It covers more than 110 sports, from cricket and football to kabaddi, fencing and the para sports, men's and women's alike.
What you will find here
- How a match works, for every sport: the shape of a match in a minute, before any rule.
- Rules, more than 2,600 of them. Each answers one question in plain words, starting with the ones you need to follow a match and ending with the officials' detail.
- Words, more than 6,500 terms with what they mean, from the ones you hear in every match to the ones only regulars use.
- Tournaments, more than 350 of them: who holds each title, who won before and how the format works.
- Countries
- Rankings and qualification: how a sport ranks its players and how they reach the big events, for the sports where these are written.
Why it exists
Sport is hard to get into from the outside. Each sport has its own words, scoring and formats. Dozens of sports are running at any time, and the coverage you see follows a handful of big events, most of them men's. Someone new does not know where to start, which events matter or what the commentators mean. And when friends argue over a rule, there is rarely one plain place to settle it.
SportsMaze is meant to be that place, whether you start from nothing or come with one question.
How we write
- Rules are read from each sport's own rule book, and results from the organisers' records.
- Plain words, with the sport's exact term beside them.
- The answer first, then how it works.
- Where a rule differs between competitions, we say so instead of giving one version.
- Women's sport and para sport sit alongside men's, not after it.
- Facts only. No betting tips, odds or gossip.
