How is trampoline gymnastics scored?

Four marks are added. Execution is out of 20 and horizontal displacement out of 10, and both lose points for faults. Difficulty and time of flight have no upper limit: one adds up the value of the ten elements and the other the seconds spent in the air. Penalties are taken off the total.

How it works

  • The formula: "Score = E (max. 20 pts) + H (max. 10 pts) + D + T - P".
  • E, execution: judges deduct for form on each element and for the landing at the end.
  • H, horizontal displacement: deductions for landing away from the centre of the bed.
  • D, difficulty: the total value of the elements performed.
  • T, time of flight: the time in the air, measured by a device.
  • P, penalties: for dress, a late start, an over-long warm-up or signals from a spotter.
  • Measured by machine: time of flight and horizontal displacement are recorded electronically under the chair of the judges' panel.
  • Precision: execution, displacement and difficulty are marked in tenths. Time of flight is in hundredths.
  • The panel: a chair, six execution judges and two difficulty judges.
  • Rounding: only the total is rounded, to two decimal places.
  • If the electronics fail: the chair works the figures out from the official video.

The glossary has the trampoline scoring entry, the time of flight, the horizontal displacement, the trampoline difficulty entry, the execution entry and the Chair of Judges Panel.

Tricky cases

What is a perfect score?

There is none. Execution and displacement are capped at 20 and 10, but difficulty and time of flight are open-ended.

Does a higher jump score more by itself?

Yes. More time in the air is a higher T mark, whatever is performed.

An exercise stops after six elements. How is it marked?

On the six elements completed. The chair declares a lower maximum mark to match the number of valid elements.

Who decides a disagreement between the two difficulty judges?

The chair of the judges' panel.

Why the rule exists

Two of the four marks are measured, not judged. Height and staying in the middle of the bed are what make an exercise look controlled, and a machine can time and place every landing more reliably than a person can. That leaves the judges to watch the one thing a machine cannot: form.
