What is drafting in triathlon, and when is it allowed?
B · Beginner · Transition and the bike · 4 of 5Drafting is riding close behind another cyclist to shelter from the wind. Elite sprint races and relays are draft-legal, so riders form packs. Age-group and long-distance races are draft-illegal: each rider has a zone 12 metres long, and anyone who enters it has 25 seconds to pass.
How it works
- Two kinds: "Draft-legal competitions" and "Draft-illegal competitions".
- Legal for elites: the mixed relay, super sprint and sprint distances.
- Illegal: middle and long distance for everyone, and age-group standard distance.
- The zone: "12 meters long measured from the leading edge of the front wheel".
- Passing through: an athlete may enter the zone "but must be seen to be progressing through" it.
- 25 seconds: the most allowed to pass through another athlete's zone.
- Passed: an athlete is passed "when another athlete's front wheel is ahead of theirs".
- Dropping back: the passed athlete must move out of the new leader's zone, and may not re-pass before doing so.
- Vehicles: the zone behind a vehicle is 35 metres, in draft-legal races too.
- When entry is excused: for safety, within 100 metres of an aid station or transition, at an acute turn and on excluded sections.
- In draft-legal races: no drafting off an athlete of a different gender, off an athlete on a different lap or off a motorbike or vehicle.
- The penalty: shown with a blue card and served in the bike penalty box.
The glossary has drafting, the draft zone, the overtake entry, the draft legal racing entry, the draft penalty, the blocking entry and the penalty box.
Tricky cases
A rider moves up into another's zone, cannot get past and drops back. Is that a penalty?
It can be. Several consecutive attempts to overtake without success may be treated as a drafting infringement.
A rider is overtaken and immediately accelerates to take the place back. Is that allowed?
No. The overtaken rider must first drop out of the passing rider's zone. Re-passing before then is a drafting violation.
Is elite standard-distance racing draft-legal?
In practice it is. The table in the text copy read is ambiguous for that row, so the page does not rely on it.
In a draft-legal race, can a woman draft behind a man from another wave?
No. Drafting off an athlete of a different gender is forbidden.
Why the rule exists
Sheltering behind another rider saves a great deal of effort. Where the race is meant to be an individual test, as in long-distance and age-group racing, the zone keeps each athlete riding on their own power. Elite short-course racing chose the opposite, which turns the bike leg into tactical pack riding and puts the decision on the run.
