What gets a triathlete disqualified?

A · Advanced · The run, penalties and relays · 3 of 3
Checked 14 October 2026

Severe breaches: repeated drafting, dangerous or unsportsmanlike conduct, striking or deliberately targeting another athlete, riding through transition and failing to serve a time penalty. It is shown with a red card. A disqualified athlete may still finish the race, and may protest afterwards.

How it works

  • What it is for: "severe rule violations, such as but not limited to, repeated bike draft infringements, and/or dangerous or unsportsmanlike conduct".
  • The signal: a whistle, a red card, the athlete's number called in English and the word "Disqualified".
  • Delayed: for safety reasons an official may wait before issuing it.
  • Posted: the athlete's number is shown on a board in the area after the finish.
  • Carry on: "An athlete may finish the competition if a Technical Official issues a disqualification."
  • In the swim: deliberate targeting, and dunking, punching, scratching or kicking.
  • On the bike: a second drafting offence at standard distance or shorter, missing the penalty box and deliberately causing harm or a crash.
  • In transition: cycling out, making no attempt to dismount and interference that stops another athlete continuing.
  • Penalties not served: not stopping for a time penalty.
  • Starting in the wrong wave: in an earlier wave than the one assigned.
  • Beyond it: suspension, for fraudulent or very severe violations. Beyond that, expulsion.
  • Officials' discretion: they may penalise conduct that is not listed, if an unfair advantage was gained or danger was created on purpose.

The glossary has the disqualification, the yellow, blue and red cards entry, the technical official, the penalty, the DNF entry and the draft penalty.

Tricky cases

An athlete is shown a red card on the bike. Must they stop?

No. They may finish the competition and then protest.

An athlete finds out an hour after finishing that they were disqualified. Is that valid?

Yes. If the penalty was not posted on the board, the athlete or their federation must be contacted, and has five days to respond if they wish to appeal.

Can a drafting disqualification be protested?

Drafting violations cannot be protested. The rules on protests and appeals were not read beyond that.

An athlete does something unfair that no rule mentions. Can they be penalised?

Yes. Officials may determine a penalty if they judge that an unfair advantage was gained or a dangerous situation created intentionally.

Why the rule exists

Letting a disqualified athlete finish looks odd, but it serves fairness. Officials on a motorbike can be wrong, and an athlete pulled off the course cannot be put back if a protest succeeds. So the athlete races on and the argument is settled afterwards.
