What are the rules in the transition area of a triathlon?

B · Beginner · Transition and the bike · 3 of 5
Checked 14 October 2026

Each athlete has one rack space and a bin. The bike must be racked properly and used kit must go in the bin. Nobody may ride inside the area. An athlete gets on the bike only after the mount line and off it before the dismount line, with one whole foot on the ground on the right side of each.

How it works

  • Your own space: "Athletes must use only their designated bike rack and must rack their bike".
  • First transition: the bike hangs upright by the front of the saddle on a traditional rack.
  • Second transition: in any direction, with the handlebars, brake levers or saddle within 0.5 m of the athlete's number.
  • The bin: kit for later use must be within 0.5 m of it. By the end of the last transition all equipment must be in it.
  • Exceptions: bike shoes may stay fixed to the pedals.
  • In the bin means: "one part of the equipment is inside the bin".
  • No riding: "Cycling is not permitted inside the transition area".
  • Mount line: athletes mount "after the mount line by having one complete foot contact with the ground after the mount line".
  • Dismount line: one complete foot on the ground before it.
  • Riding out or in: cycling out of transition, or making no attempt to dismount at the line, is a disqualification.
  • Hands only: inside the area the bike is pushed by the athlete's hands.
  • Not in the way: athletes must not impede others. Interference that stops another athlete continuing is a disqualification.

The glossary has the transition area, the transition, the mount line and dismount line entry, the time penalty, the wetsuit and the race belt.

Tricky cases

An athlete throws their wetsuit towards the bin and it lands beside it. Is that a penalty?

Yes, a time penalty for equipment outside the bin. One part of the item must be inside it.

An athlete swings a leg over the bike a stride before the mount line. What happens?

A mount line violation, which carries a time penalty. Cycling out of transition without stopping to mount at the line is a disqualification.

Can shoes be left clipped to the pedals?

Yes. Bike shoes may be placed on the bike in the first transition and may remain on the pedals at the end.

Another athlete's bike has fallen into your space. Can you move it?

Yes. Misplaced equipment can be moved by the athlete affected.

Why the rule exists

Dozens of athletes arrive in transition at once, wet, hurried and pushing bikes, so the rules are about order: one space each, nothing left on the ground and no riding among people on foot. The lines move the dangerous moment of getting on and off a moving bike out into clear space.
