How the triathlon rankings work

Checked 20 October 2026Valid for: the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) ranking, as World Triathlon's rankings page explains it (saved 2026-10-20); with the other rankings named from the World Triathlon Competition Rules 2026 and the LA28 qualification system. Official source: triathlon.org. Not covered: the points criteria of the World Triathlon Ranking and the two Olympic qualification rankings (separate documents on triathlon.org, not saved; a 2021 ranking page saved earlier no longer shows the criteria).

Triathlon keeps several rankings:

RankingUsed for
WTCS rankingThe world championship title, decided over a season
World Triathlon RankingEntries to races; LA28 eligibility (top 160) and some continental places
Individual Olympic qualification ranking21 places per gender for LA28
Mixed relay Olympic qualification rankingRelay places for LA28

The WTCS ranking is the one explained publicly: the Grand Final is worth 1250 points to the winner, each Series race 1000, and continental championships 400 (adjusted for the strength of the field). Each place below the winner is worth 7.5% less than the one above. A triathlete's total is the Grand Final plus their best two to five Series results, depending on how many Series races are held that year.

WTCS points

Points for place n = winner's points × 0.925^(n − 1)

PlaceGrand FinalSeries race
112501000
21156.25925
31069.53855.63
5915.12732.09
10619.71495.76

A worked example

Made up to show the arithmetic. A season with best results of 2nd and 5th in Series races and 3rd at the Grand Final: 925 + 732.09 + 1069.53 = 2,726.62.
