Can you leave the court in padel?
I · Intermediate · Serving and play · 2 of 2Checked 15 October 2026
Where the court has a safety area, a ball that bounces in and leaves over a side wall or through a door may be chased and returned from outside; one over the end wall wins the point. The door post above 0.92 m is neutral. Without a safety area, the hitter wins.
How it works
- Needs: a safety area.
- Lights in it: no outside play.
- Over the end wall: point to the hitter.
- Over a side wall or door: may be chased.
- Door post: neutral above 0.92 m.
- Return from outside: normal rules.
- No safety area: point to hitter.
- Serve out of door: fault where not allowed.
The glossary has the out-of-court play, the safety area, the net post, the correct return, the point lost and the umpire.
Tricky cases
A serve bounces in and out through the door on a court with no safety area. Result?
A fault.
Can I lean on the door post?
Yes, above 0.92 m.
The ball goes over the side wall. When is the point over?
When it bounces twice or hits something outside.
Is outside play allowed on every court?
No.
Why the rule exists
Outside play is spectacular but needs space, so it is allowed only where safe.
