How many points to win a set in volleyball, and how many sets in a match?
B · Beginner · Scoring and winning · 2 of 8Checked 13 October 2026
A set is won by the first team to 25 points with a lead of at least 2. A match is won by the first team to win three sets. If the sets are tied at 2-2, the fifth and deciding set is played to 15, again with a lead of 2.
How it works
- Sets one to four: first to 25, two clear. At 24-24 play continues: 26-24, 27-25 and so on. There is no cap.
- Fifth set: first to 15, two clear.
- Match: best of five sets.
- 3 minutes between sets. The break between the second and third sets may be extended to 10 minutes.
Tricky cases
Is there a points cap in a set?
No. A set goes on until one team leads by 2.
Is the fifth set also played to 25?
No. The deciding set is played to 15 with a 2-point lead.
Are all five sets always played?
No. The match ends when a team wins its third set.
Why the rule exists
Best of five gives the stronger team time to show it, and the shorter fifth set brings a long match to a quick, tense finish.
