How does rotation work in volleyball?
B · Beginner · Rotation and serving · 3 of 8Each time a team wins the serve back from its opponents, its six players move one place clockwise and the player arriving at back-right serves. A team that keeps winning rallies on its own serve does not rotate. The order is fixed by the line-up given in before each set.
How it works
- Positions 1 to 6: 4, 3 and 2 are the front row, left to right. 5, 6 and 1 are the back row, left to right. Position 1, back-right, serves.
- Rotation: when the receiving team wins the rally, the player in position 2 moves to 1 and serves, the player in 1 moves to 6, and so on round.
- The coach gives in the starting line-up before every set. That order must be kept all set.
- A rotational fault is a serve by the wrong player. The opponents get a point and the serve, the order is put right, and any points the team scored while out of order are cancelled if the moment can be identified.
Tricky cases
Does a team rotate every time it scores?
No. It rotates only when it wins the serve back from the opponents.
Does the line-up carry over from one set to the next?
No. The coach hands in a new starting line-up before each set.
The wrong player served and nobody noticed for three points. What happens?
When it is found, the opponents get a point and the serve, and the points scored by the team at fault since the error are cancelled. If the moment cannot be worked out, the point and serve are the only penalty.
Why the rule exists
Rotation makes every player take a turn at the net and at the back, so a team cannot leave its best attacker in the front row all match.
