What is an overlap or positional fault in volleyball?

I · Intermediate · Rotation and serving · 1 of 8
Checked 13 October 2026

At the moment the server hits the ball, the receiving team's players must be standing in their rotation order: each back-row player behind their front-row partner, and each player in the right order across their row. After the hit, everyone may move anywhere. Under the 2025-2028 rules the serving team may stand anywhere.

How it works

  • Front to back: each back-row player must be level with or behind the front foot of the front-row player directly in front. So 1 behind 2, 6 behind 3, 5 behind 4.
  • Side to side: in each row the left player must be level with or to the left of the centre player, and the right player level with or to the right.
  • Position is judged by the feet on the floor at the moment of the service hit.
  • Players need not stand in a neat grid. Only these relationships matter.
  • After the service hit, players may go anywhere on their court and the free zone.
  • The serving team's players are free to occupy any position at the service hit.
  • Positional fault: a point and the serve to the opponents, and the positions are corrected.
  • If the server also faults at the moment of the hit, the serving fault is counted first. If the serve goes wrong only after the hit, for example it lands out, the positional fault is counted.

Tricky cases

Can the setter run to the net before the serve is hit?

It depends on which team. On the receiving team, the setter may stand as close to their target spot as the overlap rules allow, and may run only once the server hits the ball. On the serving team there is no restriction on position.

Can players swap positions after the serve?

Yes. After the service hit they may occupy any position. A back-row player who moves forward is still a back-row player for attacking and blocking.

Does the serving team have to line up in rotation order?

No, under the 2025-2028 rules. Its players may stand anywhere on their court at the service hit. The service order itself must still be followed.

Why the rule exists

It keeps the rotation real at the start of each rally while letting players run to their specialist places once the ball is served.
