Can you touch the table in table tennis?
I · Intermediate · Rallies, points and doubles · 4 of 7A player loses the point if their free hand touches the playing surface during a rally, if they move the table, or if they or their clothing touch the net. Touching the table with the bat hand or the body is allowed as long as the table does not move.
How it works
| What happens during the rally | Result |
|---|---|
| Free hand touches the playing surface | Point lost |
| The player, or anything they wear or carry, moves the playing surface | Point lost |
| The player, or anything they wear or carry, touches the net assembly | Point lost |
| Racket hand, bat or body touches the table without moving it | No penalty |
| Free hand touches the side of the tabletop without moving it | No penalty: the sides are not the playing surface |
The free hand is the hand not holding the bat. A player may switch the bat from hand to hand during a rally; the free hand is whichever is empty.
Tricky cases
Can a player lean on the table after the point is over?
Yes. The rule applies while the ball is in play.
A player bumped the table with a thigh and it shook but did not shift. Is the point lost?
It depends on whether the playing surface moved. If it moved, the point is lost.
Can a player change hands during a rally?
Yes. Nothing in the Laws prevents it: the racket hand is the hand carrying the racket at that moment.
Why the rule exists
Leaning on the table would let a player reach further and could shift the table mid-rally. The ban on moving it protects the bounce for both players.
