What happens if two lead climbers reach the same hold?

I · Intermediate · The route and the score · 2 of 2
Checked 14 October 2026

The climber who ranked higher in the previous round is placed ahead. This is count-back. If a tie for a medal still remains in the final, the climber with the shorter climbing time is ahead. Outside the medal places, climbers who are still level stay tied.

How it works

  • First: "count-back to the General Ranking after the preceding round".
  • No count-back: where the preceding round was climbed in two starting groups.
  • Second, podium only: "breaking podium ties remaining after countback by using actual climbing times, lower times being better".
  • Only in the medal round: time is used in the scheduled medal phase, normally the final.
  • How time is measured: rounded down to the second, to the moment of the top or of the fall.
  • If the final is cancelled beforehand: the semi-final becomes the medal round and time is used there.
  • Why best climbs last: the starting order is the reverse of the ranking, so the leader knows what they must beat.

The glossary has the lead tie-break, the count-back entry, the climbing time, the lead result, the starting group and the starting order.

Tricky cases

Two climbers score 41+ in the final. One was 3rd in the semi-final and the other 6th. Who is ahead?

The climber who was 3rd in the semi-final.

Two climbers top the final and were tied in the semi-final as well. Who gets gold?

The one with the lower climbing time, measured to the moment the final anchor was clipped.

Two climbers tie for 6th place in the final after count-back. Is time used?

No. Time is used only to break podium ties.

Is count-back from a qualification with two groups used in the semi-final?

No. A ranking from a round with multiple starting groups cannot be used for count-back.

Why the rule exists

Ties are common in lead because a hard move stops several climbers at the same hold. Count-back rewards form across the event. Time is kept as the last resort, and only for medals, so that lead does not turn into a race.
