Sport climbing
Sport climbing has three disciplines. In boulder, climbers take on short climbs without a rope above thick matting, scoring for each top and for zones, marked holds partway up. In lead, each climber gets one attempt at a tall route, clipping their rope into fixed points as they go, and the result is how high they got. In speed, two climbers race side by side up identical routes on a standard wall, timed to a thousandth of a second.

Where and when it is played
On climbing walls: lead on a wall at least 15 metres high and speed on a standard wall. The big events: the Olympic Games every four years and the IFSC World Championships every two years. At Paris 2024 boulder and lead were one combined event beside speed; at Los Angeles 2028 boulder, lead and speed are three separate events [the LA28 qualification systems, research/qualification/sport-climbing/].
