What is a false start in speed skating?

B · Beginner · The races · 2 of 4
Checked 14 October 2026

The starter calls "Go to the start", then "Ready", and fires after a pause of 1 to 1.5 seconds. A skater who moves after "Ready" but before the gun, breaks early or is slow to settle is given a false start. The first brings a warning; any skater in that pair who false-starts again is disqualified.

How it works

  • "Go to the start": stand between the pre-start line and the start line, 2 m apart.
  • "Ready": take the starting position and hold still.
  • Gun: 1 to 1.5 seconds after the skaters are set.
  • Skates: fully behind the line, not touching it.
  • False start: moving before the gun, breaking early or being slow to set.
  • First false start: a warning.
  • Next false start in the pair: disqualification.
  • Recall: a second shot or whistle, and a stop signal 50 to 60 m out.

The glossary has the false start (long track), the starting procedure, the armband, the pairs racing, the disqualification and the inner lane and outer lane.

Tricky cases

One skater breaks and the other follows. Who is charged?

Only the skater who broke first.

Both false-start together. What happens?

Both are warned; a skater who then false-starts again is disqualified.

A skater wears the wrong armband. What happens?

It is a disqualification; skaters must wear the right armband and start in the right lane.

Can a camera call a false start?

Yes. Electronic detection may support the starter and confirm a false start.

Why the rule exists

A held start makes the gun the only signal, so reaction time is fair. Disqualifying on the next false start stops skaters gambling on an early break.
