What are the lane rules in speed skating?
B · Beginner · The races · 3 of 4Each skater must stay in their own lane and change lanes on the crossing straight every lap. The skater moving from the inner lane must not hinder the one coming from the outer lane. Cutting the inner line on a curve, failing to change lanes or interfering with the other skater all bring disqualification. Pace-making is banned.
How it works
- Stay in lane: crossing fully into another lane may be a disqualification.
- Crossing straight: from the end of one curve to the start of the next.
- No change: on the first straight of the 1000 m and 1500 m.
- Right of way: the skater coming from the outer lane.
- Curves: no cutting the inner line or moving the blocks.
- Falls: no disqualification if the skater returns straight to their lane.
- Overtaking in a lane: the skater in front keeps their line; the overtaker avoids contact.
- Pace-making: following or leading another skater is banned.
The glossary has the crossing straight, the keeping to the lane, the overtaking in long track, the pace-making, the lane change and the inner lane and outer lane.
Tricky cases
Two skaters collide on the crossing straight. Who is at fault?
Usually the skater leaving the inner lane, unless the other acted to obstruct.
A skater drifts wide coming out of a curve. Disqualified?
Not if they return at once to the inner lane, before the 1000 m finish lines.
A skater who has been lapped tucks in behind the leader. Allowed?
No. They must stay at least 10 m behind and must not pace the leader.
Can teammates draft in a team pursuit?
Yes. The pace-making ban does not apply within a team.
Why the rule exists
Separate lanes keep pairs racing apart, so each skater races the clock alone. Giving way to the outer skater sets a clear rule for the one point where lanes meet.
