How does long track speed skating work?
B · Beginner · The races · 1 of 4Long track skaters race in pairs on a 400 m oval, counter-clockwise, each in their own lane. They swap lanes on the back straight every lap, so both cover the same distance. The race is against the clock, not the other skater: the fastest time across all pairs wins. Olympic distances run from 500 m to 10,000 m.
How it works
- Track: a 400 m oval with two lanes, curves of 180 degrees.
- Direction: counter-clockwise, inner side on the left.
- Pairs: two skaters, inner lane in white armband, outer in red.
- Lane change: every lap, on the crossing straight.
- Result: the best time wins.
- Olympic men's distances: 500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m, 5000 m, 10,000 m, mass start, team pursuit.
- Olympic women's distances: up to 5000 m, plus mass start and team pursuit.
- Lap times: recorded to a hundredth of a second.
The glossary has the long track, the oval, the pairs racing, the lane change, the counter-clockwise and the time trial format.
Tricky cases
Does beating your partner matter?
Not for the result; the times are compared across all pairs.
Why do skaters change lanes?
Because the outer lane is longer on the curves, so swapping evens the distance.
Is the track always 400 m?
For ISU championships, World Cups and the Olympics, yes, indoors on artificial ice.
What is a quartet start?
Two pairs on the track at once, about half a lap apart.
Why the rule exists
Swapping lanes every lap makes both skaters cover the same distance despite the inner lane's tighter curves. Racing the clock means the draw of a partner does not decide the result.
