How to qualify in Speed skating

How skaters qualify for the speed skating and short track World Championships

Checked 20 October 2026Valid for: the ISU World Speed Skating Championships (single distances, allround and sprint) and the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, under the ISU Sports Rules for speed skating and for short track (both 12 June 2026). Not covered: the annual ISU Communications that name the qualifying events and set the qualifying times (not saved); French Alps 2030 Olympic qualification (not published); the European and junior championships in detail.

Long track (speed skating)

A country earns places (quota places) in each race through a qualification ranking built from the season's World Cup races. Each skater it enters must also have skated a qualifying time.

RaceMost per countryField size
500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m324
Women's 3000 m, men's 5000 m320
Women's 5000 m, men's 10,000 m212
Mass start224
Team pursuit, team sprint1 team8 teams

The ranking fills most places from World Cup points and the rest from the fastest times. In the 500 m, for example, 18 places go by points and 6 by times. The host country always gets one place per race if its best skater is close (in the first 10 reserve places).

Short track

Every ISU member can enter one skater per distance (500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m). It can enter more if its skaters did well at the previous World Championships:

Last year on that distanceEntries this year
One or more skaters in the top 322
Two or more skaters in the top 163

The top 12 relay teams on the season's World Tour classification enter the relays.

Long track: how the ranking is built

The ISU builds a Special Qualification Ranking List for each race from two rankings over the designated qualifying events: one on points, one on best times. The top of the list comes from points, the rest from times:

RaceFrom pointsFrom times
500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m186
Women's 3000 m, men's 5000 m164
Women's 5000 m, men's 10,000 m84
Mass start24none
Team pursuit and team sprint62
  • For the two longest distances, points from both long races are added together.
  • Only skaters inside their country's maximum count.
  • Up to 10 reserve places (6 for teams) are kept; unused places go down this list, with priority to countries that have no place yet.
  • Countries choose which qualified skaters to enter, with one substitute per race.

Long track: allround and sprint championships

ChampionshipFieldMost per country
Allround24 women, 24 men3 per gender
Sprint28 women, 28 men3 per gender

Up to two places per country are pre-allocated for skaters in the top 12 (allround) or top 16 (sprint) at the previous championships; the host gets at least one. The rest come from a qualification ranking built from the World Cup 1500 m and 3000 m or 5000 m (allround) or 500 m and 1000 m (sprint).

Short track: more detail

  • The host may always enter three per distance, but only the skaters it qualified count towards next year's entries.
  • The total a country may bring per gender runs from one to four, depending on how many places it qualified, or more if it has a relay team (up to five skaters in all, individual and relay together).
  • The top 20 on the World Tour classification for each distance go straight into the heats (500 m, 1000 m) or quarter-finals (1500 m).
  • If the host is not in the relay top 12, it replaces the lowest-ranked team.

For India

An Indian short track skater can enter one distance by right. In long track, India would need a skater ranked in the World Cup qualification ranking and with the qualifying time.
