How many attempts do para powerlifters get?

B · Beginner · The lift · 2 of 3
Checked 14 October 2026

Each athlete has one attempt in each of three rounds, in whole kilograms, starting within two minutes of the name call. The opener is at least 25 kg. After a good lift the next must be at least 1 kg heavier; after a no lift it may be the same. Lifters go lightest bar first.

How it works

  • Three rounds: one attempt each.
  • Weights: whole kilograms.
  • Clock: two minutes from the name call.
  • Opening: at least 25 kg.
  • Opening change: once, up to 10 kg, five minutes before.
  • After a good lift: at least 1 kg more.
  • After a no lift: same weight allowed.
  • Order: lightest attempt first; ties, highest lot first.

The glossary has the rounds and attempts, the opening attempt, the lifting order (para powerlifting), the lot number, the marshall and the team official (para powerlifting).

Tricky cases

Can a lifter go lighter after a good lift?

No. At least 1 kg heavier.

Can the opener drop from 30 kg to 20 kg?

No. It cannot go below 25 kg.

Who changes the attempt weight?

The marshall accepts changes.

Can a coach help the lifter onto the bench?

Yes, one team official, who then leaves the bench area.

Why the rule exists

Lifting in order of weight means the bar only gets heavier, which keeps loading quick and safe.
