What happens if two pentathletes are level?
A · Advanced · The competition · 1 of 4If two athletes are level on points after two, three or four events, the one with the better result in the most recent event is placed higher. If that is level too, the event before is used, then the one before that. The world ranking is the last resort. A dead heat at the finish is settled the same way.
How it works
- Level on points: "the athlete with the best result in the last phase will be ranked in the higher position".
- Still level: the previous event, and so on.
- Last resort: the higher Pentathlon World Ranking.
- At the finish line: athletes are placed by the photo finish, on the torso.
- A dead heat on the photo: the better laser run result decides, then swimming, then obstacle, then fencing.
- Across groups: the same rule ranks athletes from different qualification groups who have the same points.
- In the fencing ranking round: a tie on victories goes to the winner of the bout between the two.
- In a direct elimination bout: a tie when the minute ends goes to the higher seed.
The glossary has the tie in direct elimination entry, the laser run finish, the modern pentathlon points entry, the ranking round, the fencing world ranking and the handicap start.
Tricky cases
Two athletes have the same points before the laser run. Who starts first?
The one with the better swimming result, since swimming is the event before it. They start at the same second, and the tie-break sets their order and shooting stations.
Two athletes cannot be separated on the photo finish. One ran the laser run faster. Who is ahead?
The one with the better laser run result.
They tie on every event. What then?
The athlete with the better Pentathlon World Ranking position is placed higher.
Two teams tie in the team classification and cannot be separated. What happens?
They are declared equal.
Why the rule exists
Looking at the most recent event first favours the athlete who is performing better as the day goes on. It also means the tie-break needs no extra competition: everything it uses has already happened.
