How do you win a modern pentathlon?

By being first across the finish line of the laser run. Fencing, obstacle and swimming each earn points. Those points become a head start in the laser run: one point is one second. So the leader starts first and the rest chase. The order at the finish line is the final result.

How it works

  • Points for each event: "Modern Pentathlon (MP) Points are awarded according to the pentathletes' performances in each discipline."
  • Fencing: in the ranking round, winning 70 per cent of bouts is 250 points.
  • Obstacle: points from the time, with each 0.33 seconds worth 1 point.
  • Swimming: 1:10.00 for 100 m is 250 points, with 1 point for each 0.20 seconds.
  • Laser run: 13:20 for the senior course is 500 points, with 1 point for each second.
  • The conversion: before the laser run the points are added, and "a difference of 1 pentathlon point equates to 1 second running".
  • The winner: "The first pentathlete/team to cross the finish line in the Laser Run phase is the winner."
  • Squaring the totals: if the winner has fewer points in total than another athlete, points are added so the scores match the finishing order.
  • Final placings: athletes in the final are ranked by their place after the laser run.
  • A fresh score each round: places below the final are decided by the points scored in the semi-final or qualification group.

The glossary has the modern pentathlon points entry, the points tables, the handicap start, the laser run, the combined event entry and the semi-finals and finals entry.

Tricky cases

An athlete leads by 15 points before the laser run. What is that worth?

A start 15 seconds ahead of the athlete in second place.

The fastest laser run of the day comes from an athlete who started 40 seconds back and finished second. Do they win?

No. The winner is the first across the line, not the fastest in the last event.

An athlete wins on the line by a torso but started level on points with the runner-up. How do their totals compare?

The winner is placed first. Where the winner's total would be lower, points are added so that it is not.

Is there a maximum score?

The rules read set benchmarks, such as 250 points for a swim of 1:10.00, and add or subtract from them. They do not set a maximum for the competition.

Why the rule exists

A total of points across four events is hard to follow and can be decided before the last event ends. Turning the points into a staggered start makes the last event a race where everyone can see who is winning, and where the first to finish has won.
