How far do pentathletes run, and how is the finish judged?

Checked 14 October 2026

Seniors run 3,000 metres in five legs of 600 metres, one after each shooting series. The race ends at a finish line on a straight of at least 30 metres. Athletes are placed in the order their torso reaches the line. Head, arms and legs do not count. The first across wins the competition.

How it works

  • The distance: 5 x 600 m for seniors, juniors and under 19, making 3,000 m.
  • The pattern: run to the range, shoot, then run a leg. This is done five times. After the last series the athlete runs to the finish.
  • The course: any surface, well marked and wide enough for two runners to pass anywhere.
  • Hills: the difference between the lowest and highest points is at most 50 m.
  • The last 30 m: straight and flat.
  • The finish gate: used only on the final lap. On the other laps athletes pass through a corridor beside it.
  • The finish: by "any part of their torso (as distinguished from the head, neck, arms, legs, hands or feet)".
  • No help: no physical assistance or refreshment during the race, and no pacing by a non-competitor.
  • Allowed: shouted advice from someone off the course, and a medical check by official staff.
  • Complete the course: an athlete who does not, or who leaves it and gains from doing so, is eliminated.
  • The points: 13:20 for the senior course is 500 points, with a point for each second.

The glossary has the laser run finish, the laser run, the last penalty stop area, the pace management entry, the modern pentathlon points entry and the handicap start.

Tricky cases

Two athletes reach the line together and one stretches a hand out in front. Who wins?

The one whose torso reaches the line first. The hand does not count.

A coach runs alongside for 50 metres shouting encouragement. Is that allowed?

Shouting from off the course is. Running with or behind an athlete may be unauthorised assistance.

An athlete cuts a corner by accident and gains ten metres. Is intent needed for a penalty?

No. A deviation, "deliberate or not", that gained a material advantage means elimination.

Does the fastest laser run time matter if the athlete does not win?

It decides their points for the event, and it is the first tie-break for a dead heat at the line.

Why the rule exists

Short legs keep the runners coming back to the range, which is where the order changes most. The torso rule is borrowed from athletics, and it stops a finish being won by a thrown arm. The ban on help keeps a race that is already a chase from becoming a team effort.
