What is the fencing direct elimination in pentathlon?
I · Intermediate · Fencing · 3 of 7A knockout bracket fenced in the semi-finals and finals at senior and junior level. Each bout is won by the first to five hits, or by whoever leads when one minute is up. If the score is level at the end of the minute, the higher-seeded athlete wins. Points are awarded by finishing place, with 250 for the winner.
How it works
- When: in individual semi-finals and finals and in relays, for juniors and seniors.
- The rounds: of 32, 16 and 8, then the semi-final and the final.
- Winning a bout: "the first athlete to reach five hits or, if the one-minute time limit expires, by the athlete with the higher score".
- A tie: the athlete with "the higher ranking from the Seeding Round/Fencing World Ranking" is declared the winner.
- Double hits: counted for both fencers.
- The seeding: from the seeding round held before the semi-finals. It serves for both the semi-finals and the final.
- At the Games: no seeding round. The Fencing World Ranking is used at the Olympic Games and the World Cup Final.
- With 18 athletes: the two lowest seeds fence the two above them first, and the rest join in the round of 16.
- Points: by final place: 250 for first, 244 for second, 238 for third and 236 for fourth, down to 196 for eighteenth.
- Out in the same round: athletes beaten in the same round are ranked by their seeding.
- Not starting: an athlete who does not start their first bout is eliminated and scores zero for fencing.
- Two strips: it is fenced on two pistes and is the first event of the day to award points.
The glossary has the direct elimination, the tie in direct elimination entry, the fencing world ranking, the ranking round, the semi-finals and finals entry and the modern pentathlon points entry.
Tricky cases
The score is 4-4 and both fencers hit together. What is the result?
The rules read do not settle it. They say double hits are counted in the direct elimination, and that a tie at the end of the minute goes to the higher seed. They do not say what happens when one double hit takes both fencers to five.
A bout stands at 2-2 when the minute ends. Is there extra time?
No. The higher-seeded athlete wins.
How many points separate the winner of the fencing from the athlete who goes out in the semi-final as the lower seed?
14: 250 for first and 236 for fourth.
An athlete wins their first bout and then withdraws injured. What do they score?
They are marked as did not finish, ranked last of the round they withdrew from and given the points for that place.
Why the rule exists
A pool of one-hit bouts is hard to show: dozens of bouts at once, each over in seconds. A knockout on a raised strip gives the fencing a beginning and an end. Giving a tied bout to the higher seed makes the seeding round worth fighting for and avoids extra time in a tightly timed day.
