How many rounds are there in a modern pentathlon competition?

Three at senior and junior level. Qualification is held in groups of 20 to 36 athletes, and 36 go through. They are split into two semi-finals of 18, and the top nine from each make a final of 18. Each round is a complete competition, and scores do not carry over.

How it works

  • Qualification groups: 20 to 36 athletes each, or up to 38 where there are enough shooting stations.
  • Who is in which group: by the Pentathlon World Ranking, placed across the groups in a snake pattern.
  • Advancing: the top 18 from each of two groups, the top 12 from three or the top 9 from four.
  • Semi-finals: 36 athletes "split over two groups of 18".
  • The final: "the top 9 from each group of Semi-finals", so 18.
  • Under 19, under 17 and under 15: no semi-finals. A final of 36 follows qualification.
  • Fencing in qualification: a ranking round, which scores points.
  • Fencing before the semi-finals: a single seeding round, which scores no points and seeds the direct elimination for both the semi-finals and the final.
  • A withdrawal: an athlete who pulls out before a semi-final or final through injury or sickness is replaced by the next best not yet qualified.
  • Country limit: a federation may have at most four athletes in the semi-finals and finals.

The glossary has the semi-finals and finals entry, the ranking round, the direct elimination, the fencing world ranking, the modern pentathlon points entry and the pentathlete.

Tricky cases

An athlete has a poor semi-final but scrapes into the final in ninth place. Do they start the final behind?

No. Each round is scored on its own. Only the fencing seeding carries over.

Six athletes from one country finish in the qualifying places. Do all six go on?

No. The federation chooses which four take part in the semi-finals and finals.

Where does an athlete who goes out in the semi-final finish overall?

Between 19th and 36th, by the points they scored in their semi-final group.

Is the Olympic format the same?

The rule book says the top-category rules apply to the Olympic Games as far as they do not conflict with the Olympic qualification rules. The Olympic format itself is not in it.

Why the rule exists

A final of 18 fits on one shooting range and one fencing hall, and can be shown in one sitting. The earlier rounds exist to get from a field of a hundred or more down to that number fairly, with the ranking used to keep the strongest apart.
