How a match works, in a minute

How an artistic gymnastics score works

  1. Men compete on six apparatus: floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. Women compete on four: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor.
  2. Each exercise gets two scores, added together. The D score is the difficulty of what the gymnast did, and has no upper limit.
  3. The E score is how well they did it. It starts at 10 and loses points for every error: 0.1 for a small one up to 1.0 for a fall. A landing with no step or hop is a stuck landing.
  4. The highest score wins each apparatus. A gymnast's scores on all the apparatus added together make the all-around total.

How long

Balance beam and women's floor exercises last up to 90 seconds; men's floor up to 70 seconds.
