How are dragon boat races organised?

B · Beginner · The race · 3 of 3
Checked 14 October 2026

Races are held in straight lanes at least 9 m wide, with no more than nine boats in a race. Heats are drawn by lot or seeded. Championships must give crews that lose in the heats a second chance, through repechages or tail races. With fewer than six crews, times from each round may be added to decide places.

How it works

  • Lanes: at least 9 m wide; 13.5 m to 15 m at championships.
  • Lane 1: nearest the finish judges.
  • Boats per race: no more than nine.
  • Heats: drawn by lot or seeded.
  • Second chance: repechage or tail race at championships.
  • Final: at least three crews; secondary finals for lower places.
  • Small entries: times from every round added; missing one rules a crew out.
  • Withdrawing without medical reason: a 50 USD penalty.

The glossary has the heats, the repechage and tail race, the finals and secondary places, the aggregated times, the racing lane and the regatta course.

Tricky cases

Can a crew skip the heats and race only the final?

No. A crew must race at least one earlier round, unless the final is the only race.

A crew misses one round of an aggregated-times event. What happens?

It does not get a final result.

Must every lane have the same number of boats per heat?

Heats in a round may differ by no more than one boat, the larger ones first.

What if only one boat turns up for a race?

It must paddle the course to set a time for the next round.

Why the rule exists

A second-chance round stops one bad heat ending a crew's event. Adding times when entries are small gives every crew several races.
