Can a dragon boat leave its lane?

I · Intermediate · The race · 3 of 4
Checked 14 October 2026

Each boat keeps a straight line down its lane and at least 2 m of clear water, paddle to paddle, from other boats. Leaving the lane or impeding another crew can cost 5 seconds. In races of 1000 m or less, wake riding, using another boat's bow wave, is banned. A crew that could have avoided a collision is disqualified.

How it works

  • Line: straight down the middle of the lane.
  • Clear water: at least 2 m between paddle blades.
  • Leaving the lane: a 5-second penalty, whether or not the result is affected.
  • Steering error: not normally penalised unless another crew is impeded.
  • Over 1000 m: crews may leave their lanes if they do not impede.
  • Wake riding: banned in races of 1000 m or less.
  • Overtaking: the overtaker gives clear water; the other must not block.
  • Umpire flags: white for a clean race, red for an infringement, black for a Disciplinary Code breach.

The glossary has the correct course and clear water, the leaving the lane, the wake riding, the collisions, the umpire flags and the racing lane.

Tricky cases

Does a crew have to be warned before a lane penalty?

No. An umpire may award 5 seconds whether or not the result was affected; ignoring warnings risks disqualification.

Two boats collide because of rough water. Who is at fault?

The chief official decides; a re-race may be ordered if the result was materially affected.

What does a red flag during the race mean?

An infringement has been seen; it gives the crew a chance to correct it.

Can a crew be coached from a boat alongside?

No. Outside help or being accompanied by other boats is forbidden.

Why the rule exists

Twenty paddles a side need space, so clear water prevents clashes. Banning wake riding keeps each crew moving on its own effort.
