What is a false start in dragon boat racing?

I · Intermediate · The race · 2 of 4
Checked 14 October 2026

Boats are held at the stern and aligned so their bows are level. The starter asks "Are you ready?", then calls "Attention" and "Go" within 5 seconds. Moving between "Attention" and "Go" is a false start. A crew that makes two can be excluded or given a 5-second penalty; anticipating "Go" can cost 2 to 5 seconds.

How it works

  • Assembly: behind the start at least 3 minutes before.
  • Called forward: no later than 2 minutes before, into the drawn lanes.
  • Held start: sterns held, bows aligned, dragon's heads included.
  • Not ready: the drummer raises a hand above the head.
  • Commands: "Attention", then "Go" or a signal, within 5 seconds.
  • After the alert: no paddles moving in the water.
  • False start: a red flag and a recall; two by one crew, exclusion or 5 seconds.
  • Jumping the start: 2 to 5 seconds if an advantage was gained.

The glossary has the start procedure, the held start, the false start, the jumping the start, the late to the start and the equipment failure at the start.

Tricky cases

A crew's steering oar breaks in the first 50 m. What happens?

The race is restarted, if the crew stops and the paddlers and drummer raise their arms.

A paddle breaks off the start. Restart?

No. A paddle is the exception; the crew uses a spare.

A crew is late to the start three times in an event. What happens?

A warning, then a penalty of up to 5 seconds, then disqualification from the class.

Do false-start penalties count towards disciplinary points?

No. They sit outside the Disciplinary Code.

Why the rule exists

A held start lines every bow up exactly. Penalising early paddling keeps the start a test of reaction, not anticipation.
