How are the final placings worked out in BMX racing?

By how far each rider got. Riders in the final are ranked by the final. Those who went out in the qualifiers come next, by the round they reached and their place in it, and then those who went out in the motos, by points. Ties are broken first by time in the previous heat, then by place in it.

How it works

  • First: the phase reached: final, qualifiers or motos.
  • Then, in the final or qualifiers: the rank in the last completed round.
  • Then, in the motos: the total points.
  • Then: the time in the last heat completed, and after that the time in the heat before.
  • Tie-breakers in order: time in the previous heat; place in the previous heat; best finish in earlier qualifying rounds; the third, second and first moto results; the time trial; the UCI ranking.
  • Still tied: the riders share the place, and the next place is not used.
  • A dead heat inside a heat: where the scoring system cannot split two riders in a moto or in a place that does not affect progress, both are given the better place.
  • Combined categories: the result is split back into the original categories.
  • Disqualified riders: not ranked.

The glossary has the qualifiers, the moto and BMX racing.

Tricky cases

Who finishes ninth?

The best of the riders who went out in the semi-finals: the fifth-placed riders, separated by time.

Two riders tied for fifth in their semi-finals cannot be separated. What places do they get?

Both ninth. The next place awarded is eleventh.

Can a rider who crashed in the final finish below a semi-finalist?

No. The phase reached comes first, so every finalist is ranked above every rider who did not reach the final.

Is a moto dead heat decided by a run-off?

No. Both riders are scored with the better finishing place.

Why the rule exists

Only eight riders race the final, but ranking points and prize money go further down. The classification gives every rider a place by treating each round as a rung: nobody who went out earlier can finish above someone who went out later.
