How to qualify in Cycling
How BMX riders qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
BMX at Los Angeles 2028 has two disciplines, each with a men's and a women's event.
BMX racing (eight riders racing over jumps and berms): 24 riders per gender. Places go to countries:
- The UCI BMX Racing Olympic Qualification Ranking on 30 May 2028 (17 places): adds up each country's three best riders from 4 August 2026 to 29 May 2028. The top 2 countries get three riders, 3rd to 5th two, 6th to 10th one.
- The 2027 continental championships in Africa, the Americas and Asia: one place each.
- The 2027 and 2028 World Championships: one place each (the 2028 one is in Houston, 21 to 27 May 2028).
- Host country and universality: one each per gender.
BMX freestyle park (tricks in a skatepark-style arena, judged): 12 riders per gender.
- The Olympic Qualifier Series (Tokyo, Shanghai and Montreal, May and June 2028): six places, to the riders by name.
- The 2026 Urban Cycling World Championships in Riyadh (3 to 7 November 2026): two places for countries.
- The 2027 World Championships in Haute-Savoie, France: three places for countries.
- Host country: one per gender.
For India, the Asian BMX racing championships in 2027 are the one continental route (one place per gender). BMX freestyle has no continental places.
BMX racing places (per gender)
| Route | Places |
|---|---|
| Qualification ranking: countries 1st and 2nd (three each) | 6 |
| 3rd to 5th (two each) | 6 |
| 6th to 10th (one each) | 5 |
| 2027 continental championships: Africa, Americas, Asia (one each) | 3 |
| 2027 World Championships: best country without a place | 1 |
| 2028 World Championships: best country without a place | 1 |
| Host country | 1 |
| Universality | 1 |
| Total | 24 |
The ranking adds up, for each country's three best riders (elite and under-23 together):
| Results | Counted |
|---|---|
| World Championships | 2027 and 2028 |
| World Cup | Best 14 |
| Continental championships | One (the latest, if there are two) |
| Hors Classe international races | Best three |
| Class 1, Class 2 and regional games | Best eight together |
| National championships | 2027 |
A rider with points in both elite and under-23 counts once, in the higher. Ties go to the country's best rider on the elite, then under-23, then junior ranking. Europe and Oceania must each have a country among the ranking places.
Who can ride (racing): born on or before 31 December 2010; a UCI licence; at least 10 points on the BMX racing individual ranking of 30 May 2028; at least one World Championships or World Cup in the qualification period.
BMX freestyle places (per gender)
| Route | Places | To |
|---|---|---|
| Olympic Qualifier Series, final ranking | 6 | The rider |
| 2026 Urban Cycling World Championships | 2 | The country |
| 2027 World Championships | 3 | The country |
| Host country | 1 | The country |
| Total | 12 |
- Qualifier Series: the top six riders, at most two per country. The series places are given out first.
- World Championships: the best countries from continents with no place yet, one per country. Once every continent has a place, the next best countries.
- At most two riders per country.
Who can ride (freestyle): born on or before 31 December 2013 (15 in 2028); a UCI licence; at least one Qualifier Series event, World Championships or World Cup in the qualification period.
Where the document disagrees with itself. Section C gives the freestyle qualification period as 1 November 2026 to 11 June 2028; the timeline starts it on 3 November 2026 and ends it at the last Qualifier Series event (1 to 4 June 2028).
Places turned down
- Racing: down the ranking, or down the same championship results, then the ranking.
- Freestyle: a rider's place goes down the Qualifier Series ranking; a country's place goes down the 2027 World Championships results.

The qualification ranking

- Two periods added together: 27 April 2026 to 30 May 2027, and 31 May 2027 to 29 May 2028.
- At most two continental championships per continent count (the two latest).
- Ties go to the country with the best-placed rider.
- Europe and Oceania must each have a country; if not, the best of them takes the last ranking place.
Continental and World Championships places
- Only for countries without a ranking place; one per country.
- If no country on a continent is eligible, the place goes to the best country from that continent on the ranking.
- At the World Championships, the elite race is used first. Countries placed through the elite race are left out of the under-23 count.
Who can ride
- Born on or before 31 December 2009.
- A UCI licence.
- At least 10 points on the UCI cross-country individual ranking of 30 May 2028.
One rider using a place from another cycling discipline can be added in the five days before entries close (22 to 26 June 2028), within the limit of two.

How road cyclists qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
Road cycling at Los Angeles 2028 has four events: a road race and an individual time trial for men and for women. There are 180 places, 90 per gender. Time trial riders come from the road race squads: there are no separate time trial places.
Road race places go to countries in this order:
- The UCI road ranking of countries on 19 October 2027 (78 places per gender): the top 5 countries get four riders, 6th to 10th three, 11th to 20th two, 21st to 43rd one.
- The 2027 World Championships road race in Haute-Savoie, France (24 August to 5 September 2027): two places, for countries with none yet.
- The 2027 continental championships road race in Africa, the Americas and Asia: two places per continent, for countries with none yet.
- Host country: the United States gets two road race places per gender.
- Universality: two per gender.
For India, the Asian road race championships in 2027 (two places per gender) are the route if India is outside the top 43 countries on the ranking.
Road race places (per gender)
| Route | Places |
|---|---|
| Ranking of countries, 19 October 2027: 1st to 5th (four each) | 20 |
| 6th to 10th (three each) | 15 |
| 11th to 20th (two each) | 20 |
| 21st to 43rd (one each) | 23 |
| 2027 World Championships road race: best two countries without a place | 2 |
| 2027 continental road races: Africa 2, Americas 2, Asia 2 | 6 |
| Qualification places | 86 |
| Host country | 2 |
| Universality | 2 |
| Total | 90 |
The ranking. The UCI road ranking by nations of 19 October 2027 counts elite and under-23 results on the UCI road calendar over the previous 52 weeks. The date is the end of the 2027 road season and is provisional until the 2027 calendar is confirmed.
Europe and Oceania are not given continental places. If either has no country on the ranking places, its best country takes the last place, and the bottom country loses one.
World Championships and continental places are one per country, for countries with no ranking place.
Per country: four riders per gender in the road race, two in the time trial. One extra rider from another cycling discipline can be added to the road race in the five days before entries close (22 to 26 June 2028), within the limit of four.
Time trial places (per gender, 35 riders)
Only countries with a road race place can have time trial riders.
| Route | Places |
|---|---|
| Ranking of countries, 19 October 2027: best 25, one each | 25 |
| 2027 World Championships time trial: best 10 countries not yet in, one each | 10 |
Each continent must have at least two countries in the time trial; if not, its best-ranked country with a road race place gets one, and the bottom of the ranking loses one. The host's guaranteed places are for the road race only.
Where the document disagrees with itself. The opening table gives two universality places per gender but only two in the total column; its grand total of 180 counts four. Section D.1 speaks of "a maximum of 88 qualification quota places"; the routes in D.1 add up to 86, and 88 with the host places.
Who can ride
- Born on or before 31 December 2009.
- A UCI licence.
- At least 10 points on the UCI individual road ranking of 19 October 2027 or 13 June 2028.
Places turned down
A road race place goes first to a country with no road race place that had a rider in the top 10 of the 2027 World Championships time trial, then down the ranking of countries. A time trial place goes down the ranking to countries with a road race place, then down the World Championships time trial results.

How track cyclists qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
Track cycling at Los Angeles 2028 has twelve events, six for men and six for women: team sprint, sprint, keirin, team pursuit, madison and omnium. There are 190 places (95 per gender) and no host country places.
Every place comes from one source: the UCI Track Olympic Qualification Ranking, one ranking per event, from 14 October 2026 to 10 April 2028. It adds up points from:
- the 2026 and 2027 Track World Championships;
- the best two World Cup results in each of the 2027 and 2028 seasons;
- the 2027 and 2028 continental championships (for India, the Asian Track Championships), at three quarters of the normal points.
Team events are ranked by country. Sprint and keirin share one ranking of riders. Qualifying a team opens doors to other events: a team sprint squad can also ride the sprint and keirin, and a team pursuit squad can also ride the madison.
Places by event (per gender)
| Event | Places | How |
|---|---|---|
| Team sprint | 24 (8 teams of 3) | Top 8 countries on the team sprint ranking |
| Sprint and keirin | 14 | The 14 best riders on the sprint and keirin ranking from countries without a team sprint place; at most two per country. Each place lets the country enter one rider in both events |
| Team pursuit | 32 (8 teams of 4) | Top 8 countries on the team pursuit ranking |
| Madison | 12 (6 teams of 2) | Top 6 countries on the madison ranking without a team pursuit place |
| Omnium | 13 | Top 13 countries on the omnium ranking without a madison place |
| Total | 95 |
Extra entries from a team place:
- Team sprint countries can enter two riders in each of the sprint and keirin, from their team sprint squad. Up to 30 riders per event.
- Team pursuit countries can enter a madison pair. Up to 14 pairs.
- Madison countries can enter one omnium rider. Up to 19 riders.
The country must confirm its place in the first event to use the extra entry.
Per country: eight riders per gender (nine if one rider from another cycling discipline is added). One team sprint team, one team pursuit team, one madison pair, one omnium rider, two sprinters and two keirin riders.
Every continent gets a sprinter and an endurance rider. If a continent has no rider in any sprint event, its best country on the sprint and keirin ranking gets a sprint and keirin place. The same applies to the endurance events (team pursuit, madison, omnium) through the omnium ranking. The places come off the bottom of the ranking.
The qualification ranking
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Period | 14 October 2026 to 10 April 2028 |
| Competitions | World Championships 2026 and 2027; best two World Cup results in 2027 and in 2028; continental championships 2027 and 2028 |
| Points | UCI scale (article 3.3.010); continental championships × 0.75 |
| Team events, madison, omnium | Ranking by country: only each country's best team or rider scores; lower places move up |
| Sprint and keirin | One combined ranking of riders: each country's best two riders per event score |
Points scale for the omnium, sprint and keirin (per rider):
| Place | World Championships | World Cup | Continental championships (before × 0.75) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1000 | 800 | 600 |
| 2 | 900 | 720 | 540 |
| 3 | 800 | 640 | 480 |
| 4 | 750 | 600 | 450 |
| 8 | 550 | 440 | 330 |
| 16 | 260 | 208 | 156 |
| 24 | 85 | 80 | 60 |
| 25 and below | 1 | 1 | 1 |
Team events score more: a team pursuit win is 2000 at the World Championships (500 per rider), a team sprint win 1500 (500 per rider), a madison win 2000 (1000 per rider).
So winning the Asian Championships sprint (600 × 0.75 = 450) is worth less than fourth at a World Cup (600).
Who can ride
- Born on or before 31 December 2010.
- A UCI licence.
- At least 10 UCI points in an event on the qualification ranking.
Places turned down
