How do riders get to a BMX final?

Through three phases. In the motos every rider races three times against the same group, and the riders with the lowest points totals go through. The qualifiers are knockout rounds in which the first four of each heat go on. The first four from each of the two semi-finals make up a single final.

How it works

  • The motos: three rounds. The riders in each heat race once in each round.
  • Moto points: a rider scores their finishing place: 1 for first down to 8 for eighth. The lowest totals go through.
  • The qualifiers: held for categories with 17 or more riders. The rounds are named by their distance from the final: 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 finals.
  • Who goes on: "the top four riders from each heat shall transfer to the next Round".
  • The final: a single heat, held for categories with nine or more riders.
  • Eight or fewer riders: no final. The total after three motos is the result.
  • Seeding the motos: by UCI ranking, by a time trial, at random or by a "scrambled" method. The technical guide must say which.
  • Seeding by ranking: the best riders are spread across the heats so that they do not meet until the qualifiers.
  • Cancelled early: if racing stops before the final, the last completed round gives the result.

The glossary has the moto, the qualifiers and BMX racing.

Tricky cases

A rider wins two motos and crashes in the third. Are they out?

No, not necessarily. Moto results are added, so two wins and one poor score can still be a low enough total to go through.

How many riders from a semi-final reach the final?

Four from each, making eight.

A category has seven riders. Is there a final?

No. With eight or fewer riders the total score after three rounds of motos decides the result.

Do the same riders meet in all three motos?

Yes, with ranked or random seeding. Once seeded, the make-up of the heats stays the same for the three rounds. Scrambled seeding can mix them.

Why the rule exists

One crash at the first turn can end a rider's lap through no fault of their own. Three motos, scored on the total, mean a single bad race does not send anyone home. After that the knockout rounds do the cutting quickly.
