How does a BMX race work?
B · Beginner · The race · 1 of 3Up to eight riders start together from a gate at the top of a hill and race one lap of a dirt track with jumps and banked turns. The order across the line decides it. A day's racing is a series of these short heats, with the best riders moving on each time until one heat of eight is the final.
How it works
- The unit: "heats consisting of eight or less riders form the basic unit of competition".
- The track: a closed loop, 300 to 450 metres long, with at least three turns.
- The start: from a gate on a starting hill, released by a recorded voice and lights.
- The finish: a rider has finished when the tyre of the front wheel reaches the finish line, with rider and bike together.
- The phases: the motos, the qualifiers and the final.
- Who it is for: riders from the age of 5. The top level is called Championship, with elite, under-23 and junior categories for men and women.
- Two wheel sizes: standard 20 inch bikes and 24 inch "cruisers".
- In charge: the commissaires' panel, which "is the final authority at any competition".
The glossary has BMX racing, the gate start, the moto and the berm.
Tricky cases
Is a BMX race more than one lap?
No. Each heat is one lap of the track.
Is the fastest time the winner?
No, not in the racing itself. The order of finish in each heat decides. Lap times are used for choosing gates and for breaking ties, and in the separate time trial.
Can more than eight riders be on the gate?
No. Heats have at most eight riders, and the gate is marked with positions 1 to 8.
Is BMX racing the same as BMX freestyle?
No. Racing is a race round a track. Freestyle is judged on tricks and has its own regulations.
Why the rule exists
A lap takes well under a minute, so a single race would be over too soon and would turn on one mistake. Heats of eight give everybody several starts, keep the track safe from overcrowding and let a meeting sort hundreds of riders of all ages in a day.
