How old do you have to be to race BMX, and what are the categories?

Checked 14 October 2026

Five. A rider must be at least 5 on the first day of practice. Above that, riders are grouped by age, gender, wheel size and level. The high performance level is Championship, with elite, under-23 and junior categories. Amateurs race at Challenge level in age groups, and riders of 30 and over may race Masters.

How it works

  • Minimum age: "A rider must be at least 5 years of age", counted on the day of the first practice session.
  • Racing age: otherwise the year of the event minus the year of birth.
  • Championship level: men and women elite (19 and over), under 23 (19 to 22) and juniors (17 and 18).
  • Challenge level: boys and girls in single-year groups from 5 to 16, and men and women in bands from 17 upwards.
  • Masters: men and women aged 30 and over.
  • One level a season: from 17 a rider chooses Championship or Challenge (or Masters from 30) and cannot switch during the season.
  • Cruisers: 24 inch bikes race at Challenge level only.
  • Five to make a class: a category is held only with at least five confirmed riders. A smaller one is combined with the next older group.
  • Plates: white with black numbers for elite, grey for under 23, black for juniors, yellow for boys and men at Challenge level, blue for girls and women, red for cruisers.

The glossary has BMX racing and the moto.

Tricky cases

Can a four-year-old race if they turn five later in the year?

No. The minimum of 5 is the real age on the day the event's practice begins.

Only three riders enter the girls' 9 class. Do they race?

Yes, with the next group. A category with fewer than five is combined with an older category, and the results are split back afterwards.

Can an elite rider also race the Challenge class at the same event?

No. A rider cannot take part in more than one of the levels in the same season.

Can a rider on a 20 inch bike be combined with the cruiser class?

No. Standard and cruiser categories cannot be combined.

Why the rule exists

A seven-year-old and a seventeen-year-old cannot share a gate. Single-year groups for children keep the racing fair and the speeds matched. The split between Championship and Challenge lets the UCI regulate the top level tightly and leave the amateur classes to national federations.
