What bike does a BMX freestyle rider use, and is a helmet compulsory?
Officials' detail · The competition · 2 of 2A BMX bike with matching 20 inch wheels, a chain drive that can freewheel and a saddle. Pegs on the axles are allowed. In the park a certified helmet must be worn, strap fastened, whenever the rider is on the bike. In flatland a helmet is recommended but not required.
How it works
- The bike: two wheels of equal diameter, the front steerable, the rear driven by pedals, cranks and a chain, with no electric or other assistance.
- No fixed gear: "Fixed gear bicycles are not permitted."
- The type: a bike "generally taken to be a BMX bicycle". The only points of support are the feet on the pedals and the hands on the handlebars.
- A saddle: "A saddle is required."
- Wheels: matching and nominally 20 inches. With inflated tyres the total diameter is not more than 22½ inches, or 57 centimetres.
- Youth riders: wheels may be smaller, down to 16 inches.
- Pegs: one or more axle extenders are allowed if securely attached.
- Helmet: certified for cycling, worn "at all times while riding" and with the strap fastened, in competition, warm-up and practice.
- Recommended: back, elbow, knee and shoulder protectors and neck protection.
- Flatland: helmets are recommended and not required.
- Clothing: what is traditionally worn for BMX freestyle, not so loose that it could catch in the bike, with nothing offensive printed on it. A shirt must be worn, with or without sleeves.
- Identification: the sticker, wristband or bib the organiser provides, at all times.
The glossary has BMX freestyle, the park and flatland.
Tricky cases
Are brakes required?
It depends on rules outside the part read. The freestyle part does not mention brakes, and the general equipment rules in Part 1 were not read.
Can a rider take the saddle off to save weight?
No. A saddle is required.
Can a park rider take the helmet off during practice?
No. The helmet must be worn and fastened at all times when riding, including warm-up and practice.
Can a rider compete without a shirt?
No. A shirt must be worn during official practice, competition, ceremonies and press activities.
Why the rule exists
The equipment rules are short because the sport prizes freedom: they fix the things that make the bike a BMX bike and leave the rest to the rider. The helmet rule is the firm one, since park riders are upside down several metres above wood or concrete.
