What are the events in canoe sprint, and what do K1 and C2 mean?
B · Beginner · The race · 1 of 5The letter is the boat and the number is the crew. K is a kayak, paddled sitting with a two-bladed paddle. C is a canoe, paddled with a single blade. So K1 is a single kayak and C2 a canoe for two. Races are over 200, 500, 1000 and 5000 metres on flat water, in lanes.
How it works
- The aim: to race each other in kayaks and canoes over a defined, unobstructed course "in the shortest possible time according to the rules".
- The boats: kayak single, double and four (K1, K2, K4) and canoe single, double and four (C1, C2, C4).
- The paddles: "Kayaks must be propelled solely by means of a double-bladed paddle." "Canoes must be propelled solely by means of a single-bladed paddle."
- The distances: "200m, 500m, 1000m and 5000m".
- Up to 1000 metres: each boat has its own lane and heats are held if there are more boats than lanes.
- Over 1000 metres: no heats. All boats start together.
- Olympic events in the 2025 rules: for men, the K1 and C1 over 1000 metres and the K2, K4 and C2 over 500. For women, the C1 over 200 metres and the K1, K2, K4 and C2 over 500.
- A minimum field: at least three boats must be entered for a race to be held.
The glossary has sprint racing, the kayak, the canoe, K1 and C1.
Tricky cases
Does a sprint canoeist kneel?
Yes, by custom: the canoe paddler kneels on one knee. The rules read for this page define the canoe by its single-bladed paddle and allow knee rests. They do not prescribe the position.
Is there a mixed event?
It depends on the competition. The Olympic list in the 2025 rules has men's and women's events only. The list of non-Olympic world championship events was not read.
Can a race be held with two boats?
No. At least three boats must be entered.
Is the 5000 metres raced in lanes?
No. In races of more than 1000 metres all the boats start together and may leave their lanes.
Why the rule exists
Flat, straight water and separate lanes take the river out of the contest, so what is left is speed. Different crew sizes and distances then test different things: a 200 metre single is over in well under a minute, and a 1000 metre race has to be paced.
