How does a canoe sprint race start, and what is a false start?

On the command "Ready – Set – Go". The boats line up with their bows on the start line or in a start machine. They may not move forward at "Set". A boat that goes early is warned and the race is recalled. A second false start by the same boat means disqualification.

How it works

  • Being there: athletes must be on the water in the start area at least three minutes before the start time, and lined up in their lanes two minutes before.
  • The line: the bow of the boat is on the start line. With an automatic system the bow is in the start machine.
  • The command: "Ready – Set - Go".
  • At "Set": "the athletes must not paddle forward, or this action will be deemed to be a false start".
  • At "Go": a word, a shot or a loud sound. Athletes may react only to it and "are not permitted to anticipate the start".
  • A false start: the starter sounds a loud buzzer, everyone stops and the offender is warned.
  • A second one: "In the case of a second false start by the same athlete/crew, the boat will be disqualified".
  • Absentees: the start goes ahead without them.
  • Late or not starting: a boat that arrives too late, or does not start without a reason the committee accepts, is out of the remaining races of the competition.
  • Other recalls: the starter may recall a race for something unforeseen, such as a fault in the start equipment.

The glossary has the start (sprint) and false start (sprint) entries.

Tricky cases

Is a boat disqualified for its first false start?

No. The first brings a warning. Disqualification follows a second false start by the same boat.

Boat A false starts, then boat B false starts at the restart. Is B disqualified?

No. The rule disqualifies for a second false start "by the same athlete/crew".

A crew misses its heat because of traffic. Can it race in its other events?

No, unless the competition committee accepts the reason. A boat that arrives too late is treated as withdrawn and is out of the remaining races.

The start machine fails and one boat goes. Is that boat warned?

It depends on the cause. If the boat's own false start caused the malfunction, it is warned. If the malfunction was not caused by a false start, no penalty is given.

Why the rule exists

Over 200 metres a race is decided by a few tenths of a second, so a boat that moves a fraction early has an edge that cannot be won back. One warning allows for nerves and a twitch. The second ends the boat's race, which keeps the rest from being held on the line again and again.
