What are the rules for a sprint kayak or canoe?
Officials' detail · The race · 1 of 1Each class has a maximum length and a minimum weight: a K1 may be up to 5.20 metres and must weigh at least 12 kilograms. A kayak may have one rudder, under the hull. A canoe may have no rudder or steering device at all. Every boat must have a single hull.
How it works
| Boat | Maximum length | Minimum weight |
|---|---|---|
| K1 | 5.20 m | 12 kg |
| K2 | 6.50 m | 18 kg |
| K4 | 11.00 m | 30 kg |
| C1 | 5.20 m | 14 kg |
| C2 | 6.50 m | 20 kg |
| C4 | 9.00 m | 30 kg |
- One hull: boats "must have only one (1) hull". Multihulls and catamarans are not allowed.
- Shape: the lines of the hull must not be concave.
- Kayak rudder: "Boats may have maximum of one (1) rudder. The rudder must be placed under the hull of the boat."
- Canoe steering: "Steering rudders or any guiding apparatus directing the course of the canoe are not allowed."
- Sit in, not on: a kayak must be designed for the athlete to sit inside it.
- Open canoes: the C1, C2 and C4 may be entirely open.
- No help from the boat: no moving parts that help propel it, apart from the seat. No lubricants on the hull.
- Paddles: not attached to the boat in any way.
- Devices: data recorders must be out of the athletes' sight and must not make sound or vibrate.
- After the race: a boat that fails inspection is disqualified from that race.
The glossary has the boat specifications entry, the rudder, the hull and the wing paddle.
Tricky cases
How does a canoe go straight with a paddle on one side only?
By the stroke. The paddler steers with each stroke, since any rudder or guiding device is banned. That is technique, not a rule.
Can a team design a new kind of boat for the Olympic Games?
It depends on approval and timing. A design must have passed boat control at a world championships or World Cup the year before. Innovations must be available to all athletes, at reasonable cost.
Is there a minimum width?
No. The table in the rules read for this page gives maximum length and minimum weight only.
Can a paddler watch a speed display during the race?
No. Recording devices must be placed where the athletes cannot see them during a race.
Why the rule exists
Length makes a boat faster and lightness makes it faster still, so the rules cap one and put a floor under the other. That keeps the contest in the athletes and not in the workshop. The canoe's ban on rudders preserves its skill: steering a boat with a single blade on one side.
Where it differs
