How does the diving team event work?
A · Advanced · The competition · 3 of 5A team of at least one woman and one man, and no more than four divers, performs six different dives from six different groups. Three are from the 3 m springboard and three from the 10 m platform. On each, a woman dives, a man dives and a mixed pair performs a synchronised dive. It is a direct final.
How it works
- The team: "at least one female and one male diver but no more than four (4) divers", all from the same federation.
- Six dives: "six (6) different dives without limit of degree of difficulty from six (6) different groups".
- Who does what: two dives by a woman, two by a man and two by a mixed synchronised pair.
- Where from: three from the 3 m springboard and three from the 10 m platform.
- Round one: a woman's dive and a man's dive from the 3 m springboard.
- Round two: a mixed synchronised dive from the 3 m springboard.
- Round three: a woman's dive and a man's dive from the 10 m platform.
- Round four: a mixed synchronised dive from the 10 m platform.
- The result: the team with the highest total points wins.
- The format: a direct final, with no preliminary.
The glossary has the mixed team event.
Tricky cases
Can a team be two divers, one woman and one man?
Yes. The minimum is one of each, and those two would perform all six dives between them.
Can the team do two dives from the same group?
No. The six dives must come from six different groups.
Is there a semi-final?
No. The mixed team event is a direct final.
Why the rule exists
The event asks a federation for strength across the whole sport at once: both heights, both sexes, individual and synchronised. With six groups to cover in six dives, a team cannot hide a weakness in one kind of dive.
