How to qualify in Aquatics
How artistic swimmers qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
Artistic swimming at Los Angeles 2028 has two events: the team (eight swimmers) and the duet. There are 96 places: 10 teams and 18 duets. The document lists the team event under men and women and the duet under women.
Teams (10):
- 2027 World Championships, Budapest: the top three.
- Host: the United States, which also counts as the Americas' team.
- 2027 continental championships: one team each for Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania, but only for continents with no team from the first two steps.
- 2028 World Cup Super Final: the rest, up to 10.
Duets (18): the 10 team countries each get a duet; five more from the 2027 World Championships; three from the 2028 Super Final.
For Asia, this means the Asian continental place exists only if no Asian team finishes in the top three in Budapest.
Team places
| Route | Teams |
|---|---|
| 2027 World Championships (technical + free + acrobatic finals added) | 3 |
| Host country | 1 |
| 2027 continental championships (continents not yet in) | Up to 4 |
| 2028 World Cup Super Final | The rest (about three or four) |
| Total | 10 |
- Ties that put more than three teams in the top three at Budapest all qualify; places come off the Super Final.
- A continent with no 2027 championships gets its place from its best team at Budapest; if it had no team there, the place goes to the Super Final.
- Continental championships must be recognised by World Aquatics and send in their ranking.
Duet places
| Route | Duets |
|---|---|
| Team countries (duet chosen from the eight team swimmers) | 10 |
| 2027 World Championships (technical + free finals added), best five not yet in | 5 |
| 2028 World Cup Super Final, best three not yet in | 3 |
| Total | 18 |
Per country
A country in both events has at most eight swimmers; the duet comes from the team. A duet-only country has two.
Who can swim
Born on or before 31 December 2013 (15 by the end of 2028).
Places turned down
The next team or duet at the 2028 Super Final; continental places go to the next team at the same championships.
Where the document disagrees with itself. If the United States turns down its host place, section F.2 gives it to the next team at the Pan American Games, which is not one of the qualification events.

How divers qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
Diving at Los Angeles 2028 has eight events: 3 m springboard and 10 m platform, individual and synchronised, for men and women. There are 136 places. A country can have two divers per individual event and one pair per synchronised event. Places belong to the country, not the diver.
Individual events (in three phases):
- 2027 World Championships, Budapest: the top eight in each event.
- 2027 continental competitions: the winner in each event, if they score above a minimum. For India, this is the Asian competition.
- 2028 World Cup, two stops (February to May 2028): the rest, by best score.
Synchronised events: seven pairs from the two 2028 World Cup stops, plus the United States as host.
Individual events
| Phase | Places per event |
|---|---|
| 2027 World Championships | 8 (at most two per country) |
| 2027 continental competitions | Up to 5 (one per continent) |
| 2028 World Cup stops 1 and 2 | The rest, up to the overall limit of 136 |
Continental competitions.
- One approved competition per continent.
- An event counts only if divers from at least three countries take part.
- Only the winner can earn a place; if the winner already has one, nobody does. A neutral World Aquatics delegate must be present.
- Even if the continental competition comes before the World Championships, the World Championships places are given first.
| Event | Minimum score at the continental competition |
|---|---|
| Men's 3 m | 330 |
| Men's 10 m | 310 |
| Women's 3 m | 230 |
| Women's 10 m | 210 |
World Cup stops. Each diver's single best score in the event counts, from the furthest round reached. A finalist always ranks above a semi-finalist, who ranks above a diver who only made the preliminaries.
Every continent gets a man and a woman. If a continent has no diver in any individual event after the World Cup, World Aquatics reviews it and may give one place, based on the continent's best score without the degree of difficulty, if the diver met the minimum score.
Synchronised events
| Route | Pairs per event |
|---|---|
| 2027 World Championships | 0 |
| 2027 continental competitions | 0 |
| World Cup stop 1, top three | 3 |
| World Cup stop 2, top three not already in | 3 |
| Best single-stop score among the rest | 1 |
| Host country | 1 |
| Total | 8 |
Synchronised events at the World Cup stops are straight finals. Ties in either kind of event go to the higher score without the degree of difficulty.
Counting divers
A diver in a synchronised pair and an individual event, or in two individual events, takes one place. The total is 136 (68 per gender, but the split can shift).
Who can dive
Born on or before 31 December 2014 (14 by the end of 2028).
Places turned down
The next eligible country from the same event in the World Cup phase. Diving has its own late-replacement rules up to the team leaders' meeting (individual) and 24 hours before the first synchronised event.

How open water swimmers qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
Open water swimming at Los Angeles 2028 is one 10 km race for men and one for women, 22 swimmers each. A country can have two per race. Places go to the swimmers by name.
In order:
- The 2027 World Championships, Budapest (10 km races, 4 to 8 July 2027): the top three.
- The Open Water Swimming World Ranking on 1 February 2028: the best-ranked swimmer not yet in.
- The 2028 Olympic qualification event:
- the best swimmer from each continent not yet represented (up to five);
- the best United States swimmer, if the host has none yet;
- then the next best finishers until 22 are in (about 12 places).
Pool swimmers with the A time in the 800 m or 1500 m freestyle can also be entered, within the limit of two per country.
Places (per gender)
| Route | Places |
|---|---|
| 2027 World Championships, top three | 3 |
| World ranking, 1 February 2028 | 1 |
| Olympic qualification event: one per continent | Up to 5 |
| Olympic qualification event: host | 1 |
| Olympic qualification event: next best | About 12 (22 less those above) |
| Total | 22 |
- Ties in the top three at the World Championships all qualify.
- If the top-ranked swimmer is already in, or their country already has two, the next one gets the ranking place.
- Continental places: if a continent already has a swimmer in, its place goes to the next best finisher overall. Ties go to the World Aquatics world ranking.
- If the United States already has a swimmer in, the host place passes to the next best finisher.
- Swimmers already qualified are skipped in the results; their country's count still applies.
Who can swim
Born on or before 31 December 2014 (14 by the end of 2028).
The open water world ranking
The ranking used for the one ranking place counts each swimmer's best eight races over 24 months, weighted by the level of the race, the distance, the strength of the field and how long ago it was (see the aquatics ranking explainer).
Places turned down
The next best swimmer at the same event, within the limit of two per country.

How swimmers qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
Swimming at Los Angeles 2028 has 41 events, including three new ones per gender: the 50 m backstroke, 50 m breaststroke and 50 m butterfly. There are 830 places. A country can enter two swimmers per individual event and one team per relay.
Swimmers qualify by time, not by ranking points:
- The "A" time (Olympic Qualifying Time). Swim it at an approved meet between 1 March 2027 and 18 June 2028 and you are in, if your country enters you.
- The new 50 m events: the top six in each final at the World Cup 2027 get a place.
- Relays: the 12 fastest teams in the heats at the 2027 World Championships in Budapest.
- Universality places: a country with no qualified swimmer can send its best man and best woman (by World Aquatics points).
- The "B" time (1% slower than A): if places are left over, World Aquatics invites B-time swimmers, fastest on the world ranking first.
The A and B times (long course, 50 m pool)
| Event | Men A | Men B | Women A | Women B |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 m freestyle | 21.69 | 21.91 | 24.56 | 24.81 |
| 100 m freestyle | 47.86 | 48.34 | 53.60 | 54.14 |
| 200 m freestyle | 1:45.83 | 1:46.89 | 1:56.43 | 1:57.59 |
| 400 m freestyle | 3:45.46 | 3:47.71 | 4:06.27 | 4:08.73 |
| 800 m freestyle | 7:47.04 | 7:51.71 | 8:26.71 | 8:31.78 |
| 1500 m freestyle | 14:51.62 | 15:00.54 | 16:08.65 | 16:18.34 |
| 100 m backstroke | 53.00 | 53.53 | 59.49 | 1:00.08 |
| 200 m backstroke | 1:56.05 | 1:57.21 | 2:08.95 | 2:10.24 |
| 100 m breaststroke | 59.27 | 59.86 | 1:06.10 | 1:06.76 |
| 200 m breaststroke | 2:09.35 | 2:10.64 | 2:23.49 | 2:24.92 |
| 100 m butterfly | 51.06 | 51.57 | 57.38 | 57.95 |
| 200 m butterfly | 1:54.69 | 1:55.84 | 2:08.15 | 2:09.43 |
| 200 m individual medley | 1:57.54 | 1:58.72 | 2:09.90 | 2:11.20 |
| 400 m individual medley | 4:11.52 | 4:14.04 | 4:37.33 | 4:40.10 |
The A times come from results at past Olympics and World Championships; each B time is the A time plus 1%.
The new 50 m events
| Event | Men minimum time | Women minimum time |
|---|---|---|
| 50 m backstroke | 25.35 | 28.59 |
| 50 m breaststroke | 27.71 | 31.33 |
| 50 m butterfly | 23.55 | 26.57 |
- Direct places: three World Cup 2027 stops, each holding two of the new events. The top six in each final qualify (ties for sixth all qualify).
- Others can swim a new event only if they have already qualified in another event (A time, relay or B invitation) and have the minimum time above.
The order World Aquatics fills the 830 places
- A-time swimmers and the new-event places.
- Extra relay swimmers.
- Universality places.
- B-time invitations, until 830 is reached.
B-time invitations. If 28 or more places are left, one swimmer is invited in each of the 28 older individual events: the fastest B-time swimmer on the "modified world ranking" (each swimmer's best time from 1 March 2027 to 18 June 2028 at approved meets, at most two per country) who is not already in. If fewer than 28 places are left, those 28 swimmers are compared by world ranking position and the best go in. Ties are broken by how close the time is to the A time, then to the world record, then by World Aquatics points.
Extra events. An A-time swimmer can swim any other event where they have a B time. A swimmer with an A or B time in only one event can add one more event without a time.
Relays
- The 12 fastest teams in the heats of each relay at the 2027 World Championships in Budapest (swimming 10 to 18 July 2027). Ties for 12th all qualify.
- A qualified country can bring extra relay-only swimmers: two for one relay, up to eight for six or seven relays. Each must swim a heat or final of a relay.
- A country without a qualified relay can still enter one if it has four swimmers already qualified in individual events (notify by 24 June 2028).
Universality places
A country with no A-time swimmer, no qualified relay and no B-time invitation can enter one man and one woman. If its qualified swimmers are all one gender, it can add one of the other. The swimmer must:
- be the country's best man or woman on the World Aquatics points table in the qualification period;
- be at their first or second Olympics;
- be under 30 on 22 July 2028;
- have swum at the 2027 World Championships, the World Cup 2027, their 2027 continental championships (for India, the 2027 Asian Aquatics Championships) or a scholarship programme.
Where the document disagrees with itself. Section B gives the quota as "To be confirmed" next to 830; the Terminology Annex fixes it at 830. The tie-break steps are numbered so that step 5 refers to "after point 5" and step 6 to "after point 6"; each means the step before.

How water polo teams qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
Water polo at Los Angeles 2028 has a men's and a women's tournament of 12 teams each. The same route applies to both:
| Route | Teams |
|---|---|
| Host: United States | 1 |
| World Cup 2027 (24 to 28 February 2027), winner | 1 |
| 2027 World Championships, Budapest, best two not yet in | 2 |
| Continental qualification, one per continent (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania) | 5 |
| World Qualifier 2028 (April 2028), best three not yet in | 3 |
| Total | 12 |
For India, the Asian continental qualification (one place per gender, between July 2027 and January 2028) is the route.
The rules for each route
- World Cup and World Championships: if a team already has a place (or is the host), the next one takes it.
- Continental: the best team in each continental championships or qualification event not already in. If an event is not held, the continent's best team at the World Qualifier gets the place. If a continent has only one team, it qualifies. If a continent has no team, the place goes to the next team at the 2027 World Championships.
- World Qualifier 2028: two tournaments (3 to 9 and 17 to 23 April 2028); entry rules are in the World Aquatics competition regulations.
Who can play
14 or older on 31 December 2028.
Places turned down
