What are the diving events, and how is a competition won?

Checked 14 October 2026

Divers perform a set list of dives from the 3 m springboard or the 10 m platform: six for men and five for women. Judges mark each dive from 0 to 10. The middle marks are added and multiplied by the dive's degree of difficulty. The diver with the highest total wins.

How it works

  • Olympic events: 3 m springboard, 10 m platform and synchronised 3 m and 10 m, for men and for women.
  • World championships: the same, plus the 1 m springboard, mixed synchronised events and a mixed team event.
  • How many dives: "All individual and synchronised diving competitions for men shall comprise six (6) dives" and for women "five (5) dives".
  • No repeats: no dive of the same number may be repeated within the list.
  • From different groups: the list must draw on the dive groups, so that a diver cannot do one kind of dive six times.
  • The marks: each judge awards 0 to 10 in half points for the starting position and approach, the take-off, the flight and the entry.
  • The score for a dive: the highest and lowest marks are cancelled, the rest are added and the total is multiplied by the degree of difficulty.
  • The winner: "the diver with the highest total points shall be declared the winner".
  • Rounds: preliminary, semi-final and final. Each starts from zero.
  • Minimum age: 14 on 31 December of the year of the competition, at the Olympic Games, world championships and World Cups.

The glossary sets this out under competition format.

Tricky cases

Can a diver choose easy dives and score tens?

Yes, but it rarely wins. The marks are multiplied by the degree of difficulty, so easy dives have a low ceiling.

Do the scores from the preliminary carry into the final?

No. The preliminary, semi-final and final are separate events, each starting from zero.

Is there a 5 m or 7.5 m platform event at the Olympic Games?

No. At World Aquatics competitions other than age group events, only dives from the 10 m platform may be performed.

Why the rule exists

Diving is judged, so the rules have to make judging fair and hard dives worth trying. Dropping the extreme marks limits the effect of one generous or harsh judge. Multiplying by difficulty means a simple dive done perfectly does not automatically beat a hard dive done well.
