How is a traditional yogasana performance marked?
B · Beginner · The traditional event · 4 of 4Each asana is marked out of 10 and then multiplied by its base value. Six marks are for perfection of posture, two for stability, grace and presentation, and two for holding it for the required time. The highest and lowest judges' totals are dropped and the other three averaged. The evaluator's penalties are then taken off.
How it works
- Perfection of posture: up to 6 marks.
- Stability, grace and presentation: up to 2 marks.
- Those two together: the D judge's 8 marks for the asana.
- Time: up to 2 marks, for the hold.
- The sum: the 8 marks plus the time marks, multiplied by the base value.
- A round: the seven asana scores added together.
- Across the judges: the highest and lowest are removed and the remaining three averaged.
- Final score: that D judge score, less the evaluator's penalties.
The glossary has the traditional asana scoring, the D judges, the base value, the holding time, the evaluator and the time judges.
Tricky cases
A compulsory asana gets 5.5 for posture, 1.75 for stability and the full 2 for time. What is it worth?
9.25. The three add to 9.25, and a compulsory asana's base value on the sample sheet is 1.00.
A group D optional asana gets 5.5, 1.5 and 2. What is it worth?
8.55. The marks add to 9, and 9 times the base value of 0.95 is 8.55.
How many judges mark a traditional round?
Five, by the arithmetic: the rule removes the highest and lowest marks and averages "remaining 3 judges". The saved pages do not give the number directly.
How are the 2 marks for time lost?
Not set out in the saved pages. The sample sheet gives 2 marks for a full hold and shows nothing for a short one.
Why the rule exists
Most of the mark is for the posture itself, because that is the skill. Stillness has its own share, so a correct posture that trembles loses to one that does not. Dropping the highest and lowest scores limits what one generous or harsh judge can do.
