How does a challenge work in wrestling?

I · Intermediate · The bout · 5 of 8

Each wrestler has one challenge per bout. The coach asks for a video review of a call, and the wrestler may refuse it. If the review changes the decision, the challenge can be used again. If the call stands, the challenge is lost and the opponent receives 1 point.

How it works

  • The coach asks by pressing a button, or with a sponge supplied by the organiser, straight after the call or the missed call. The limit is 10 seconds from the points appearing on the scoreboard or the wrestlers returning to a neutral position.
  • The wrestler can reject the coach's challenge, and the bout goes on.
  • The bout is stopped for the review once the wrestlers are back in a neutral position.
  • The refereeing delegate and the mat chairman watch the video. The delegate alone gives the decision. It is final, and there is no counter-challenge.
  • Not open to challenge: passivity calls and a fall. A challenge is accepted for an illegal action that led to the fall.
  • Every kind of caution can be challenged.
  • No challenge once the winner has been declared.
  • If a technical fault prevents the review, the original decision stands and the challenge is kept.
  • A challenge must be reasoned. One made as a plain protest earns the coach a yellow card.
  • Challenges exist only at competitions with official video control.

Tricky cases

Can the wrestler overrule the coach?

Yes. If the wrestler disagrees, they reject the challenge directly and the bout continues.

Does a failed challenge cost anything?

Yes. The challenge is gone for the rest of the bout and the opponent gets 1 technical point.

Can a fall be challenged?

No, unless the challenge is about an illegal action that led to it.

Why the rule exists

Scoring happens fast and three officials can miss it. The 1-point cost keeps a coach from using the review to rest the wrestler or break the opponent's rhythm.
