What is passivity in Greco-Roman wrestling?

I · Intermediate · The bout · 4 of 8
Checked 14 October 2026

Passivity is avoiding wrestling: blocking, backing away or faking attacks. In Greco-Roman the first two passivity calls of a bout each give the active wrestler 1 point and the choice of going on standing or in par terre. From the third call on, only the choice is given.

How it works

Active wrestling is defined as seeking contact, hooking the opponent and trying to set up an attack. A wrestler who blocks it is passive.

  • The count is for the bout, whichever wrestler is called.
  • The officials use a passivity call in three situations: the score is 0-0; the score is tied and one wrestler is visibly more active; or one wrestler leads and the opponent is too defensive.
  • A wrestler who has scored with holds from standing should not be called, unless they then go inactive while the opponent scores or is visibly more active.
  • Signs of passivity in the rules include evading attacks without countering, holding the wrists without attacking, fake attacks, backing into the orange zone and staying there, and not hooking from a good position.
  • Passivity is not a caution and does not count towards the three that lose a bout.
  • Every passivity call must be confirmed by the mat chairman, and it cannot be challenged.
  • Negative wrestling is different and is punished at once: interlocking fingers, keeping the head down on the opponent's chest or avoiding contact brings a caution and 2 points to the opponent.

Tricky cases

Is passivity a caution?

No. It is recorded separately, and a third passivity does not end the bout.

Why would the active wrestler choose par terre?

It lets them attack with a lift or a turn against an opponent who starts flat on the mat.

Can a wrestler who is ahead be called passive?

Yes. One of the three situations for a call is a wrestler in the lead whose opponent "acts too defensively", and a leader who goes inactive can be called too.

Why the rule exists

A wrestler who only defends cannot be thrown or pinned, and the bout dies. The passivity rules force an attackby handing the active wrestler a point and a chance to attack on the ground.
