How many cautions before a wrestler loses?

A · Advanced · Fouls and penalties · 3 of 6
Checked 14 October 2026

A caution is the penalty for fleeing, illegal holds, negative wrestling and brutality, and it always gives the opponent at least 1 point. Three cautions in a bout lose it. Brutality or open cheating brings disqualification from the whole competition, by a unanimous decision of the three officials.

How it works

  • A caution is written as "O" on the score sheet. After each one the opponent automatically gets at least 1 point.
  • Negative wrestling, such as interlocking fingers or avoiding contact, is a caution and 2 points to the opponent.
  • The mat chairman must approve every caution. The third must be unanimous.
  • Three cautions: the bout is lost, and the winner takes 5 classification points to 0.
  • If the points are level at the end, the wrestler with fewer cautions is ahead on criteria, after the highest-value hold.
  • Passivity is recorded separately and is not a caution.

Disqualification:

  • For an obvious offence against fair play, open cheating, a serious error or brutality, by a unanimous decision of the officials. The wrestler is placed last, without a rank, and marked "DSQ".
  • For brutality after the bout has ended.
  • For deliberately injuring the opponent. The injured wrestler wins.
  • For faking an injury to avoid an opponent, if the doctors can prove it.
  • For a positive doping test.
  • If both wrestlers are disqualified, both get 0 classification points.

Tricky cases

Does a caution always cost a point?

Yes. After each caution the opponent receives at least 1 point.

Do cautions carry over to the next bout?

No. The limit is three cautions "during a bout".

Can a wrestler be disqualified without any caution first?

Yes. Brutality or deliberate injury brings immediate disqualification.

Why the rule exists

The point attached to every caution makes each foul cost something at once. The limit of three removes a wrestler who would sooner foul than wrestle.
