What are the rules for serving in beach volleyball?

B · Beginner · Serving · 3 of 6
Checked 14 October 2026

The serve is hit from anywhere behind the end line, with one hand or arm, after tossing or releasing the ball. The server has 5 seconds from the referee's whistle and one toss only: a tossed ball that drops untouched counts as the serve. A serve that clips the net and goes over is good.

How it works

  • Where: anywhere in the service zone, the 8-metre-wide area behind the end line. The server may move freely in it.
  • Feet: at the hit, or at take-off for a jump serve, the server must not touch the court, the end line or the ground outside the service zone. The foot may not go under the end line.
  • If sand pushed by the server moves the line, that is not a fault.
  • The hit: one hand or any part of the arm, after the ball is tossed or released.
  • One toss or release. If the ball lands without being touched or caught by the server, it counts as the serve, and no second attempt is allowed.
  • Time: within 5 seconds of the first referee's whistle. A serve hit before the whistle is cancelled and repeated.
  • The ball must cross the net between the antennae and may touch the net on the way.
  • The serve is a fault if the ball touches the server's partner, fails to cross the net, lands out or passes over a screen.
  • The receivers may not block a serve, or attack it while it is wholly above the net.

Tricky cases

The serve hit the net and dropped over. Is it replayed?

No. The ball may touch the net while crossing it, so play goes on.

The server tossed the ball badly and let it fall. Can they try again?

No. A tossed ball that lands untouched counts as the serve, and no further attempt is allowed.

Can the server step on the end line?

No. Touching the end line at the hit or take-off is a foot fault.

Why the rule exists

The serve starts every rally, so it is kept to one clean action against a short clock. The allowance for moving sand recognises that lines on a beach are ribbons, not paint.
