How many points and sets are there in beach volleyball?
B · Beginner · Scoring and winning · 2 of 6Checked 14 October 2026
A set is won by the first team to 21 points with a lead of at least 2. A match is won by the first team to win two sets. If the sets are tied at 1-1, the third and deciding set is played to 15, again with a lead of 2.
How it works
- Sets one and two: first to 21, two clear. At 20-20 play continues: 22-20, 23-21 and so on. There is no cap.
- Third set: first to 15, two clear.
- Match: best of three sets.
- The interval between sets is 1 minute.
Tricky cases
Is there a points cap?
No. A set goes on until one team leads by 2.
Is the third set also to 21?
No. The deciding set is to 15 with a 2-point lead.
Why the rule exists
Two players on sand tire quickly, so the match is shorter than indoors. Best of three still gives the losers of the first set a way back.
