How does the triathlon mixed relay work?
I · Intermediate · The run, penalties and relays · 4 of 4Four athletes, two women and two men, race in the order woman, man, woman, man. Each completes a full short triathlon of about a 300 m swim, a 5 to 8 km bike and a 1.5 to 2 km run, then tags the next by hand inside a 15-metre exchange zone. The clock never stops.
How it works
- The team: "4 athletes: 2 men and 2 women, who will compete in the following order: woman, man, woman, man".
- Each leg: a complete triathlon. The distance table gives 250 m to 300 m, 5 km to 8 km and 1.5 km to 2 km.
- Continuous: "Time is continuous and the timing does not stop between athletes."
- The team's time: from the first athlete's start to the fourth athlete's finish.
- The exchange zone: "15 meters long".
- The tag: the incoming athlete uses a hand to touch the body of the outgoing athlete inside the zone.
- Outside the zone by accident: a 10-second penalty in the penalty box.
- Outside on purpose, or not completed: the team is disqualified.
- Waiting: outgoing athletes wait in a pre-exchange area until an official tells them to enter the zone.
- Penalties: 10 seconds each. They may be served by any team member who has not yet finished their leg.
- Draft-legal: the mixed relay is a draft-legal event.
- Lapped: a team that is lapped on the bike is withdrawn.
- Team sheet: the athletes and a reserve of each gender are declared beforehand, and the order may be changed up to two hours before the start.
The glossary has the mixed team relay, the relay exchange, the penalty box, the draft legal racing entry, the lapped athlete and the time penalty.
Tricky cases
The incoming athlete touches their team-mate a metre before the zone. What happens?
If it was unintentional, a 10-second penalty for the team. If intentional, disqualification.
The first athlete commits a transition offence. Must she serve the penalty?
No. Any member of the team who has not yet completed their portion may serve it, in the penalty box.
Can a team put its two men first to build a lead?
No. The order is fixed: woman, man, woman, man.
Is the Olympic mixed relay run in this order?
The order used at a particular Games is set for that event and was not checked. This is the order in the competition rules read.
Why the rule exists
Four very short triathlons make a race in which the lead changes constantly. The fixed order means women race women and men race men on each leg. Letting any remaining team member serve a penalty turns it into a team decision: who can best afford ten seconds.
