How many serves does each player get in table tennis?
B · Beginner · Scoring and winning · 3 of 6Each player serves for 2 points, then the serve passes to the other. From 10-10 the serve changes after every point. Players change ends after each game, and in the deciding game they also change when the first player reaches 5.
How it works
- Before the match the choice is decided by lot. The winner may choose to serve, to receive or an end. The other player then has the remaining choice.
- The serve changes after every 2 points, whoever won them.
- At 10-10, and under the expedite system, each player serves for 1 point in turn.
- The player who served first in one game receives first in the next.
- Players swap ends after each game.
- In the last possible game of a match, they swap ends when one player first reaches 5 points.
If the wrong player serves, or the players are at the wrong ends, the umpire stops play when it is noticed and puts it right. All points already scored stand.
Tricky cases
Does the winner of the point serve next?
No. The serve changes every 2 points regardless of who won them.
The wrong player served for two points before anyone noticed. Are the points replayed?
No. The points count. Play resumes with the player who should be serving at that score.
Is the choice made by tossing a coin?
It depends on the event. The Laws say "by lot" and do not name the method.
Why the rule exists
Sharing the serve two by two means neither player holds its advantage for long. Changing ends evens out differences in lighting or background.
