Can a coach talk to a player during a table tennis match?
A · Advanced · Time, coaching, cards and officials · 5 of 8Checked 13 October 2026
Yes.
Players may be given advice at any time except during a rally, as long as it does not hold up play. In an
individual event only one named adviser may give it. An adviser who breaks the rule is shown a yellow card, and a red
card for a second offence sends them away.
How it works
- Individual events: one adviser, named to the umpire beforehand. In doubles with partners from different associations, each may name one.
- Team events: anyone authorised to be at the playing area may advise.
- Advice is allowed between rallies, in intervals and in time-outs, but not during rallies and not so as to delay play.
- Illegal advice: a yellow card as a warning.
- Any further illegal advice in the same match, by anyone on that side: a red card, and that person leaves the playing area until the match, or team match, is over.
- Advice from someone not authorised: sent away with a red card.
Tricky cases
Can a coach shout instructions during a rally?
No. Advice is allowed at any time except during rallies.
Does a coach's card cost the player a point?
No. Cards for illegal advice act on the adviser, who may be sent away.
Why the rule exists
Advice is part of the sport, but the game has to keep moving and the player has to play the rallies alone.
