What is a false start in short track?
I · Intermediate · The races · 1 of 4At ISU events and the Olympics, the first false start brings a penalty: the skater is out of that race. After "Go to the start" skaters stand still on their dots; after "Ready" they settle into position. Moving before the gun, touching the line, putting a hand on the ice or a blade tip in the ice are all false starts.
How it works
- Whistle: skaters have a limited time to reach the line.
- "Go to the start": stand still, upright, at the start dot.
- "Ready": take the starting position at once and hold it.
- False start: moving before the gun, a skate on the line, a hand on the ice, a blade tip dug in.
- Penalty at ISU events: for the first false start.
- Late to the line: a false start for delaying the start.
- Interference before the first curve's last block: the race is restarted.
- Video: the starter may consult a video referee.
The glossary has the false start (short track), the penalty, the heat box, the re-run and restart, the clear and obvious and the sanctions.
Tricky cases
One skater breaks and makes another move. Who is penalised?
Only the skater who broke first.
A skater's blade scrapes and makes another skater move. Who is at fault?
The skater who made the noise.
Can a skater fix a loose strap at the start?
Before "Go to the start", without going beyond the padding; after that it counts as delaying.
Is any false start allowed at smaller events?
An international competition may allow one false start per race, if its announcement says so.
Why the rule exists
A zero-tolerance start stops skaters gambling on an early break in races decided by fractions. Restarting after early contact keeps a crash at the first bend from deciding the race.
